Why we skip on Date Nights

Finding the time and energy to have a date night and just spend some quality time together as a couple is extremely difficult. I know for us it is damn near impossible. You’re always tired and feel like you’re running on autopilot so the last thing you want to do is go out besides, the budget simply doesn’t allow it.

Why Date Nights Are Important

True as all of the above may be, it is also critical to spend some time together, away from your children. We often live separate lives in the same house, passing each other in the hallway or kitchen. Even family dinner conversations revolve around the children and their daily whereabouts.

Budget Date Night Couple

It’s important to reconnect as a couple as often possible to avoid waking up one day and realising that you’ve grown apart to the point where you’re complete strangers sharing a home.

No More Excuses

So that is why we’re throwing excuses out of the door with these 10 Free or Budget Date Night Ideas for Parents.

  • No need for a babysitter.
  • No need to empty your purse/wallet.
  • No need to even go out of your house, well perhaps just to the garden if you have one.

So here we go:

1 – Picnic under the stars.

Free or Budget romantic picnic date night for parents

What could be a more romantic date night than lying flat on your back and admiring the magnificence of the Milky Way? A Picnic doesn’t necessarily have to involve food, especially if you just had dinner with the family. You can just lay a blanket down, throw some pillows around and get comfortable with your significant other. If you do want to plan ahead for more romantic picnics for two, check out this very practical Picnic Backpack for 2.

2 – Movie Marathon

Budget Date Night Watching TV

Curling up to watch a non-animated movie…imagine that!
Grab a blanket, some wine or hot coco and get your cuddles on. Choose 3 or 4 movies for your date night and watch them back to back. I suggest picking from different genres. A good Comedy to relax you and get you into the good vibes and of course you’ll have to throw in a good Romance here and there, it is date night after all.

Here are some movie suggestions:

Tip: A Friday or Saturday might be a good choice for this date night – not that the kids will let you sleep in, but at least you’ll have the rest of the weekend to recover from yet another sleepless night.

3 – Dinner & Dance

Budget Date Night Couple Dancing

Where are the days when Dinner and Dancing was a standard date night? Nowadays couples only dance at weddings, some only at their own.

So why not feed the little ones early and put them to bed? Turn on some soothing music and enjoy your meal together. Then its time for some slow dancing right there in your dining room, living room, kitchen, wherever you find yourselves.

Better yet, why not dance under the stars? If you don’t have access to music outside, it is definitely time to get yourselves a little Bluetooth Speaker.

Here are a few budget options that are small enough to fit in your handbag. Don’t be fooled by their size though, these are pretty powerful.

If you don’t like any of these, check out this link for more options.

4 – Quiz Night

Budget date night quiz

While this might not sound like the most extravagant date night ever, it could actually turn out to be a lot of fun.

You can easily download quizzes on virtually any topic you can think of. Perhaps pick a topic that neither of you know much about. That way you can laugh at some far fetched, ridiculous answers and both learn something new on the topic.

Here are a few quizzes to get you started:

5 – Dream Wall

Budget Date Night Dream Wall

This might be one of the most important, life altering dates ever! I know that sounds very dramatic, but its true. When you’d just met, you probably talked about your dreams and goals all the time, but as life gets in the way, conversations like that start fading away and those dreams and goals get put on the back burner, soon to be forgotten.

So grab some magazines or organize to download images from the internet in advance and choose a spot in your home where you can create a dream wall. If this is something you’d like to involve the children with, how about you focus on your relationship goals and dreams? Dedicate a space on one of your bedroom walls for this.
Post pictures, quotes, goals, anything that creates the image of the relationship/marriage you’d like to have.

If you don’t want to stick things directly to the wall. Check out this Cork Bulletin Pin Board.

6 – Sunset/Sunrise

Budget Date Night Sunset/Sunrise

What can be more beautiful than a sunset? I would say a sunrise comes close. You obviously have to get your timing right for this one, but cuddling on a bench outside waiting for the sun to set is just the start of it. You can spend hours talking and if all goes well you’ll be up long enough to see the sunrise too. Another one to maybe keep on the list for a weekend date night.

7 – Selfies

Budget Date Night Selfies

Don’t we all love a good selfie? Honestly I hate them, but it is the only way I get to capture a few moments with my 3 little monsters.
So why not make a date out of it?

This date needs to be scheduled over a full weekend, but no need to cancel any of your other plans. Simply take your phone out wherever you go and take a selfie of the two of you. In the grocery store, petrol station, parking lot, the in-laws’ etc. You’ll feel silly at first, but the fun and funny faces will pop in later and you’ll end up with some great snap shots of you as a couple that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

To make sure your photos aren’t all noses and eyebrows, get yourself one of these budget friendly selfie sticks.

8 – Write Your Story

Budget Date Night Write your story

It’s so easy to get caught up in our circumstances and routines that we miss the wonder in how far we’ve come. This date night takes you back to where it all started.

Don’t try to fit this into just one night. Either devote an entire weekend to it, or set aside one date night a week till you’re caught up with your story.
Typing it out is fine as a first draft, but get yourselves a brand new note book and dedicate it to “your story”. There is just something special about reading your story in your hand writing. This is for your eyes only, so no need to cut out the juicy bits and emotions that went with experiences.

Tip: This is a great place to incorporate some of the selfies you took earlier.

Here are a few Notebook/Journals I liked from Amazon.

9 – Bonfire

Budget Bonfire date night

There is just something so captivating and mesmerising about staring into a fire. I’m not sure if it is the glowing center or the dancing flames, but with a fire as focal point, you really don’t need anything else to set the mood. So cuddle up next to the fire and catch up on all the conversations you’ve missed out on. Who knows, you might be up long enough for another sunrise.

10 – Cook Together

Budget Date Night Cooking

We’d all love to cook our families healthy gourmet meals, unfortunately in between homework, bath time, prepping for bed and packing lunch for tomorrow that hardly seems like a possibility.

Choose one evening to feed and get the kids in bed early. Now the two of you can get creative in the kitchen, cooking that is. The meal can be as simple or intricate as you desire. It is not about the food itself, but about creating something together and just having some time to catch up.

Tip: If evenings are too hectic, perhaps a look at cooking a breakfast or lunch meal together.

I have no energy

If your main objection to date night is not the costs but rather your lack of energy, it might be a good idea to look at a quality supplement. I suggest the Vitamin B Plus Dual Action from Nutrilite.

I hope that these 10 Free or Budget Date Night Ideas for Parents will just be the start in your reconnecting journey.

As you work through this list, please share your experiences and date night photos with us.
